An organization formed in the USA in 1984 to bring under one administration the national facilities for optical astronomy at Kitt Peak National Observatory, Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory and the National Solar Observatory. NOAO is also responsible for the operation of the WIYN Telescope at Kitt Peak, and the US contribution to the international Gemini 8-meter Telescopes project. It is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), Inc., under contract to the National Science Foundation.
